On Saturday, March 23, 2024, the City Park Conservancy will host the 75th-annual Big Bass Fishing Rodeo (BBR), the country’s oldest freshwater rodeo, promising a day filled with excitement and community engagement for fishing enthusiasts. The main event, which adheres to a bank-fishing-only rule, is complemented by a variety of other activities designed to cater to all ages and interests.

These include the Battle for the Bass (BFTB), a competitive fishing challenge for students in grades 7 through 12, and Boats on the Bayou (BOTB), a bayou fishing contest specifically for kayakers and users of other non-motorized vessels. Additionally, teams of up to five can compete in the Cichlid + Bream Trim event, vying to catch the heaviest 15-stringer of bream, cichlids, and perch. The day is rounded off with the Fishtival, a free event featuring a DJ, a raffle, educational exhibitors, and stalls selling new and used fishing gear at attractive prices, ensuring a fun and educational experience for everyone.

This park, home to the New Orleans Botanical Garden, Couturie Forest and Arboretum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, and an unparalleled grove of mature live oaks, some nearing 800 years old, offers diverse experiences for all. Spanning 1,300 acres, it ranks among the largest urban parks in the U.S., attracting over 16 million yearly visits for activities like fishing, picnicking, sports, and safe outdoor play.
