Audubon Nature Institute Will Reopen In Phases

The Audubon Nature Institute is a big part of the New Orleans’ area attractions. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the museums and parks that are part of the Audubon Nature Institute. Under Louisiana’s and New Orleans’ health directive, the Audubon Nature Institute will reopen their parks and museums in phases with limited attendance and programming.

The 501(c)3 not for profit will begin the process by opening the Audubon Riverview Park on Saturday May 16, 2020, and will only allow pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Then on May 20, 2020 the Audubon Tennis will reopen allowing a limited schedule and appropriate social distancing measures. As for the Audubon Golf Course, it will remain closed until further notice. The Audubon Zoo is planned to open in early June.

“We have been preparing to reopen for several weeks,” said Audubon Chief Operating Office Kyle Burks. “From stringent cleaning protocols to removing unnecessary touchpoints, Audubon is committed to providing a safe experience for visitors. We want to take every precaution as we reopen our facilities and appreciate the community’s patience as we carefully begin to open our doors up to the public.”

With this being said, the Institute will develop a comprehensive plan to reopen with the focus on keeping the visitors, staff, volunteers, and animals healthy and safe. They have consulted with zoos and aquariums across the country as well as health officials to create the best plan.

For those attractions that require admission, there will be online ticket reservations only. There will be a limited number of guest that must use social distancing. All staff will wear masks in public spaces, use stringent cleaning protocols and provide reminders for social distancing to the guests.

The protocols will be as follows. Only 25% of the facility’s capacity will be allowed to enter, everyone must be six feet or more apart, there will be no gathering of more than 10 people in any group, there will be clear and enforced physical distancing guidelines. Employees will be informed and trained in all new safety protocols and will also be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE).

“Now, more than ever, the community needs to reconnect,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “As we open our doors to our community, we want the animals and parks in our care to inspire hope and connect our guests to the natural world during a time when we have all experienced uncertainty and grief. We look forward to sharing a joyful homecoming that we hope will offer our community some comfort in this difficult time.”
